Focus on self-compassion, not self-esteem

From the article by Kristin Neff, Why Self-Compassion Works Better Than Self-Esteem

Self-esteem involves striving to perceive yourself better than others by identifying your successes and superiority. You put them down to make yourself feel better. This is divisive, narcissistic, and ultimately self-defeating (you can’t be better at everything).

Self-compassion involves “treating yourself with the same kind of kindness, care, and compassion as you would treat those you care about.” This establishes a positive and collaborative environment.
